Back To The Future

January is a magical month. A new year is unveiled. It’s a time for reflecting on the past year and planning for the next 12 months—all while keeping an eye out for the unexpected.

Looking back, I am pleased with what PPB was able to accomplish in 2007. PPB debuted a new look last year. We updated our logo, color palette, type styles and page design to give you a more aesthetically pleasing experience when reading the magazine. But we didn't stop there. We incorporated these changes into our new website, www.ppbmag.com. The result is a more modern approach consistent with the look of today's business online and in print.

'Apprentice' Enlightenment

But then the backstabbing and ridiculous drama began to unfold in the subsequent seasons, interfering with what little was shown of the marketing campaigns and the business aspect of the show. It became impossible to discern it from any other phony “reality” series airing on MTV or VH1 and my 30-something brain couldn’t take the stupidity anymore, so I quickly lost interest.

But I decided to give the franchise another chance when celebrities were introduced into the mix. So I set the DVR for the first episode, thinking that within 10 minutes I’d hit the delete button. But the opposite occurred; I became a fan. I loved the celebrity dynamic and Donald was, well, The Donald.

One Great Idea

Earl Nightengale said, “Just one great idea can revolutionize your life.” I keep this quote posted on my computer monitor so I see it every day and remind myself of the power of ideas.

As a writer, I'm always looking for great ideas to communicate to my readers. As a co-worker, I'm always looking for great ideas to help my team succeed. As a human being, I'm always looking for great ideas to make me a better person.

A New Chapter

In 1994, I was hired by a Dallas-based distributor to manage the promotional products segment of the business. While I enjoyed the experience of managing a couple company stores and consulting with numerous clients, I was ready in 1998 to focus on the writing aspect of my career.

When I learned the PPB feature editor position was available, I thought I would be a perfect fit and, thankfully, Tina Filipski agreed. I knew joining the PPAI staff would be an important stepping stone in my career, but I didn't know where it would lead.
